OK, the RFID thing I can understand, but fingerprints?

Teacher Claims Fingerprinting Is ‘Mark of the Beast’ | Threat Level | Wired.com.

A 22-year veteran kindergarten teacher in the Texas Bible Belt could lose her job for refusing, on religious grounds, to give fingerprints under a state law requiring them.

The evangelical Christian, Pam McLaurin, is fighting a looming suspension, claiming that fingerprinting amounts to the “Mark of the Beast,” and hence is a violation of her First Amendment right to practice her religion. Her case is similar to a lawsuit by a group of Michigan farmers, some of them Amish, challenging rules requiring the tagging of livestock with RFID chips, saying the devices are also the devil’s mark.

Alrighty, then.

Iraq Swears by Bomb Detector U.S. Sees as Useless – NYTimes.com.

Despite major bombings that have rattled the nation, and fears of rising violence as American troops withdraw, Iraq’s security forces have been relying on a device to detect bombs and weapons that the United States military and technical experts say is useless.

The sensor device, known as the ADE 651, from $16,500 to $60,000 each. Iraq has bought more than 1,500 of the devices.

The small hand-held wand, with a telescopic antenna on a swivel, is being used at hundreds of checkpoints in Iraq. But the device works “on the same principle as a Ouija board” — the power of suggestion — said a retired United States Air Force officer, Lt. Col. Hal Bidlack, who described the wand as nothing more than an explosives divining rod.

Still, the Iraqi government has purchased more than 1,500 of the devices, known as the ADE 651, at costs from $16,500 to $60,000 each. Nearly every police checkpoint, and many Iraqi military checkpoints, have one of the devices, which are now normally used in place of physical inspections of vehicles.

Not to worry, Israel, the US has your back. We don’t want our war criminals in jail, either.

VOA News – Netanyahu: Israel Would Not Cooperate With Gaza War Crimes Tribunal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will never allow its soldiers and war-time leaders to go before an international war-crimes tribunal following the assault on militants in the Gaza Strip 10 months ago.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a fiery speech at the start of the Israeli parliament’s winter session, condemning the recent report from a U.N. panel headed by former war crimes prosecutor Richard Goldstone.

The Goldstone report accuses Israeli forces of committing war crimes by using disproportionate force and targeting civilians during the 22-day assault on militants last December and January in the Gaza Strip.

Like creationists who believe fossils were put here by God to test the faithful, believers in the Shroud of Turin believe evidence of its forgery was put here by God to test the faithful.

The sheep need to look up.

How to Make Your Own Shroud of Turin – Shroud of Turin – Gizmodo.

Further proving that the Shroud of Turin—a linen cloth that believers say covered Jesus after the crucifixion—is a big fake, scientists have made a reproduction using inexpensive materials and easy techniques from the Middle Ages. This is how:

Italian chemist Luigi Garlaschelli and his team used the same type of linen. First they aged the cloth with heat, using a normal oven, and washing it with water. The shroud was placed over a student covered in red ochre, using a mask that simulated Jesus’ alleged physiognomy. They kept aging and washing the shroud, adding the necessary blood stains in the process.

Is religious fervor keeping US film distributors from picking up the new film on Charles Darwin? Several religious films also had trouble finding distribution in the US as well. Perhaps it’s only because religious-themed movies aren’t particularly popular to the dominate teenage / young adult movie-going crowd.

On the other hand, maybe the movie just sucks.

Charles Darwin film ‘too controversial for religious America’ – Telegraph.

Creation, starring Paul Bettany, details Darwin’s “struggle between faith and reason” as he wrote On The Origin of Species. It depicts him as a man who loses faith in God following the death of his beloved 10-year-old daughter, Annie.

However, US distributors have resolutely passed on a film which will prove hugely divisive in a country where, according to a Gallup poll conducted in February, only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution.

Alabama, still stuck in the Victorian era, bans sex toys. Not to worry, you can always make your own.

Thank the gods for the intertubes.

Alabama Supreme Court upholds sex toy ban.

The Alabama Supreme Court on Friday upheld the state’s ban on the sale of sex toys, but Love Stuff, the Hoover store that filed the challenge, has no plans to stop selling the devices.

While people have the right to use the devices in private, the Legislature has the right to ban public distribution of those products, the court majority ruled in a 7-2 decision.

Love Stuff had asked the court to strike down the 1998 law, arguing that the ban violated a person’s right to sexual privacy. The court upheld the law, saying public morality was a legal reason to regulate sales.

Those freaks at the Earth Liberation Front took down KRKO’s AM radio towers, to save “home intercoms”. Yeah, those AM waves are killing millions, got to stop ‘em!

Jeez, what a bunch of idiots.

Activists topple towers, claim dangers of AM radio waves – CNN.com.

A group cited by U.S. officials as a domestic terrorism threat claimed responsibility Friday for knocking down two radio station towers in Snohomish County, Washington.

The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) issued a statement saying opponents of the towers argue that “AM radio waves cause adverse health effects including a higher rate of cancer, harm to wildlife, and that the signals have been interfering with home phone and intercom lines.”

“When all legal channels of opposition have been exhausted, concerned citizens have to take action into their own hands to protect life and the planet,” Jason Crawford, a spokesman for the group, said in a news release.

PETA wants to save the flies.

I wonder how they feel about the swine flu virus. Do they feel vaccines are unethical, too?

The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he’s bedeviled by a fly in the White House.

PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.

“We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals,” PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. “We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals.”
